Differential Impacts of Acacia Invasion on Nutrient Fluxes in Two Distinct Bornean Lowland Tropical Rain Forests

Invasive Acacia species can alter nutrient cycling processes in forest ecosystems, particularly affecting total litterfall production and litter decomposition patterns. This study examined the effects of exotic mangium Willd. on production, concentrations leaf fractions, decomposition, release lowland heath (HF) mixed dipterocarp forests (MDF) Brunei Darussalam, Borneo. Above-ground traps were installed HF MDF with without invasive present, representing four habitat types total, monthly collections conducted for 12 months. Litter bags deployed to determine rates release. Habitats invaded by exhibited higher increased nitrogen, potassium, calcium, addition all nutrients measured (nitrogen, phosphorus, magnesium, especially Acacia-invaded (AMDF) nitrogen potassium (AHF)), reduced use efficiencies AHF, stand-level calcium AMDF. lower AMDF than three other habitats. The significantly coupled two habitats is expected progressively increase abilities these produce large quantities nutrient-rich will likely eventually lead an enrichment soil, thus facilitating further invasion Acacia, MDF.
